V was not as smart as he seems to be till now and he was very proud of his so-called fake friends and almost got them disguised with his trust deep down inside him. He had become something like what could be called in other terms as a toy that can be operated anytime by his friends.  And he was, so much intelligent that he got himself completely goofed even with his life on the line.
